| IRONWORKS MAGAZINE March 06 DAVE BICKFORD A BIKER HAVEN WITH ALL THE COMFORTS Some time last winter with the snow flying, my wife and I read a brochure for a new "No Cages allowed" motorcycle lodge. The brochure stated that the lodge was opening in August 2005, so we filed it away and promptly forgot about it. Late in August, the flyer surfaced again, and I tapped in the website to learn more. The place looked interesting and at less than 300 miles from home, it also looked like a suitable destination for a road trip. We made reservations via email for the 24th of September, and away we went. Located about an hour west of the Wisconsin Dells near Hillsboro, Wisconsin, owners Brandy and Dan Vuich, themselves life-long Harley riders, have created a unique "bikes only" weekend getaway that can't be beat. Leaving the busy Chicago city life, they have built four of the neatest cabins-for-two you'll likely find anywhere. (More cabins are under construction.) Each Cabin is fully equipped. King sized bed, cozy gas fireplace, whirlpool tub, kitchen with refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffee pot, kitchen tools and all the amenities. Out back, you'll find a screened-in porch that overlooks your back yard with fire pit (wood included), gas grill and picnic table. The driveways are paved, and each cabin has it's own covered and lit attached parking space. There's even a hose to wash your bike if you have a mind to, plus a packet of 'goop' to wash the grease off your hands if you get dirty working on your bike. Understanding that motorcycles travel light, Brandy and Dan have provided almost everything. There's satellite TV and a DVD player, tables, chairs you name it; just bring food or stop by the local County Market in Hillsboro and you're all set. (Yes they sell beer and liquor on Sunday). Oddly enough, we just happened to be the first guests of the lodge. Riding six hours to get there, the last two in the rain, we arrived later than we wanted to, cold, wet, and too tired to go out and look for something to eat. Not to worry, Brandy and Dan went into town and brought back a pizza for us. Hospitality? These guys are the definition! The surrounding roads provide some of the best riding anywhere. You're near the Dells to the east and the Mississippi river to the west. Wildcat Mountain State Park is less is less than seven miles away, and Viola, home of S&S Cycle is a scant 15 miles down the road. The Lodge will be open through the winter too, so even the cage drivers will be allowed to enjoy the facility while the snow is flying. If you're in the area, don't miss it. You won't be disappointed. Scottie Ducati Spoke-N-Road Magazine Sept 05 Scotties secret hideaway revealed. Alright I'm going to let you in on my favorite place to disappear; it is too good not to share. The idea of riding rolling roads bordered by some of the most beautiful scenery around is more than appealing. The thought of rolling up to a secluded cottage with secure bike parking and all the luxury of a diamond hotel is temptation at it's best and I wrote the book on temptation. If this sounds appealing to you, don't wait, check out the Blue Highway Motorcycle Lodge in Hillsboro WI. The Kickapoo Valley is awesome in the fall and owners Dan & Brandy offer very attractive rates. The Blue Highway is a great place to get some needed R&R or an excellent place to curl up with that special someone. |
